Applications

Ecotech offers fully integrated solar powered particulate monitoring systems utilising either the beta attenuation or light scattering technique for accurate, reliable and low maintenance performance.

solar_particulate_monitor

These systems incorporate solar panels, batteries, data acquisition, remote communication and data validation and reporting software that is used to remotely download data from the monitors using 3G communication. Meteorological parameters such as wind speed, direction, relative humidity and temperature can also be incorporated and mounted on an integrated mast.

Ecotech designs and supplies systems capable of determining the contribution of particulates from a local source such as a quarry or a site undergoing decontamination.

These systems utilise a variety of particulate monitors, wind speed and direction sensors and the Ecotech WinAQMS Data Acquisition System which calculates the difference between the upwind particulate concentration and the downwind particulate concentration performing calculations to determine the actual site contribution of particulates.

If site contribution rises above a settable threshold then alarms can be sent to site operators to activate dust suppression activities. Data can also be retrieved remotely using Ecotech's Wincollect software.

Particulate monitoring can be combined with:

  • Wind speed/direction
  • Automatic reporting
  • Visibility measurements
  • Gaseous pollutants (O3, CO, CO2, SO2, NOX etc)

Ecotech is an authorised systems integrator of the Met One BAM1020 U.S. EPA approved PM10 & PM2.5 Beta Attenuation Monitor.

The BAM1020 was the first PM2.5 monitor to receive USEPA Federal Equivalent Method approval.

We incorporate these accurate, reliable and low maintenance instruments into our air quality monitoring systems and distribute them globally.

Source apportionment monitoring involves instruments that allow users to measure particulate mass measurements (mg/m3) every minute, along with giving indications of changes in particulate composition and source.

particulate_monitor2

By utilising the Aurora Nephelometer (measuring scattering coeficient of aerosols) and connecting it to a beta attenuation monitor (measuring PM concentrations) it is possible to create a correlation factor which can automatically adjust the PM output from the Aurora Nephelometer in order to provide 1 minute real time PM data.

This correction factor will remain constant and can automatically be updated every hour. If the particulate type/source changes due to a change in the particulate air mass, such as when urban air is replaced by marine air due to a wind change the correction factor will change. This change in the correction factor can be continuously monitored and provides information on changes in aerosol chemistry.

This solution provides the following data:

  • Hourly averaged PM concentration from a U.S. EPA approved compliance monitors
  • Scattering coefficient from the nephelometer
  • Corrected real time 1 minute PM concentrations.
  • Scatter/PM correction factor (updated hourly)
  • Ambient Visibility based on Koshmediers theorem

Products

Ecotech supplies dust/particulate samplers and monitors for TSP, PM2.5 and PM10. Ecotech also produce the world's largest range of nephelometers, used to measure visibility along with other applications involving the scattering of light by aerosols used in global radiation balance studies.

Met One BAM1020 Beta Attenuation Monitor - Compliance Applications

The BAM-1020 automatically measures and records airborne particulate concentration levels (in milligrams or micrograms per cubic meter) using the industry-proven principle of beta ray attenuation. Thousands of BAM-1020 units are currently deployed worldwide, making the unit one of the most successful air monitoring platforms in the world.

Designations

The Met One Instruments Model BAM-1020 has long standing U.S. EPA designation as a Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) for continuous PM10 particulate monitoring. In addition, the BAM-1020 is the world’s first instrument to obtain U.S. EPA FEM designation for continuous PM2.5 monitoring, when configured with the specified settings and accessories. The BAM-1020 has also obtained corresponding certifications in other countries and regions.

The BAM1020 meets Australian Standard AS/NZS 3580.9.11:2008 Method 9.11: Determination of suspended particulate matter – PM10 Beta Attenuation Monitor.

Aurora 2000 PM Correlation Nephelometer

The Aurora 2000 is part of the ‘new generation’ nephelometers using a single wavelength to measure aerosol light scattering and derive particulate concentrations.

The Aurora 2000 is available in two configurations.

PM correlation nephelometer
  1. Configured with a PM2.5 Size Selective Inlet (SSI) to sample PM2.5, ideal in areas with stable aerosol chemistry
  2. Configured to communicate directly with a BAM1020, providing 1 minute PM corrected data, ideal in areas with multiple aerosol sources

Configuration 1

The Aurora 2000 is available with automatic flow control and a PM2.5 Size Selective Inlet. This configuration improves the correlation between the Aurora 2000 and Federal Equivalent PM2.5 methods. pm 2.5 correlation nephelometer

This sampling method enables a manual correction factor to be entered in order to derive real time (1 minute) PM2.5 concentrations. In applications where the aerosol chemistry is stable this configuration provides excellent results with minimal maintenance and a high degree of correlation.

The Aurora Nephelometer employs a smart heater controlled by a relative humidity sensor, this allows the user to set the maximum relative humidity of the sampled air, eliminating the influence of water vapour on the measurement and thus performing a “dry measurement”.

Configuration 2

In applications where aerosol chemistry is subject to change, a correction factor derived from manual sampling may be unreliable. nephelometer

The Automatic correlation PM nephelometer connects directly to the Met One BAM1020 in order to monitor and log PM hourly averages generated by a BAM1020 (PMBAM). These hourly averages are compared to the Aurora’s hourly average scattering coefficient (σscat) and a scattering to PM coefficient factor (CoefScat/PM) is calculated. This factor is then applied to the next hour of 1 min scattering coefficients measured in order to determine a 1 minute average for PM concentrations (PMaurora). This data can also be used to determine changes in aerosol source through deviations in light scattering from the expected values.
