The determination of hydrocarbons in ambient air is performed for a variety of reasons; the presence of hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene or isomers of xylene in higher concentrations can effect human health.
Hydrocarbons also act as ozone precursors leading to the formation of ozone and photochemical smog, other hydrocarbons such as mercaptans may create odour problems even in low concentrations.

Methane/Non-methane
Ecotech are a provider of a wide variety of methane/non-methane analyzers for the measurement of methane, as well as the total hydrocarbons. These analyzers are based on Flame Ionization Detection (FID) and allow continuous, trouble free sampling of total hydrocarbons and methane. The methane/non-methane analyzers are designed to minimize operator time on-site through the following features:
- Instrument menus and processes accessible remotely
- Can perform all calibrations automatically
- Automatically sends alarms when faults occur
-
- Internal, multipoint sampling option
- Discrete, multilevel concentration & fault alarms
-
- Programmable relays for concentration alarms, events and diagnostics
- Automatic FID ignition, with automatic shut-off of sample, fuel and combustion air
- Remote operation via RS-232 and Ethenet
VOC - Volatile Organic Carbons
Volatile organic compounds are an ill defined group of hydrocarbons, VOCs, result from burning of coal, oil and gasoline. These and other sources, including solvents, cleaners and paints, all contribute to the baseline level of different VOCs found in ambient air. VOCs are of interest because they photo-chemically react (in sunlight) to cause ozone and smog and in high concentrations may impact on human health.
Urban concentrations of VOCs vary greatly depending on factors such as location, traffic, available sunlight and time of day.
Ecotech offers a number of different instruments for the determination of VOCs from methane/non methane analyzers, to analyzers which use photoionisation detectors that measure the sum of aromatic hydrocarbons to gas chromatographs which can analyse inexess of 40 different VOC species.
The final selection of an instrument is dictated by the actual application and the requirements of the monitoring program. Ecotech can assist in proposing the best solution.
